Hull City have joined the chase to sign Liverpool's out-of-favour winger Jermaine Pennant, who reportedly missed out on a move to Real Madrid last week because of his high wage demands.
Hull manager Phil Brown confirmed his club's interest and said: "I would be very interested in Jermaine Pennant if he was available at the right price. We will be making enquiries."
Wigan Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City have all been linked to the 25-year-old, who has failed to impress in two-and-a-half years at Anfield.
A move for Pennant this month would come 10 years after Arsenal made headlines by paying Notts County £2million for the then 15-year-old.
He failed to fulfil his potential with the Gunners and later joined Birmingham before his £6.7million switch to Liverpool.
Hull are looking to strengthen during the transfer window to consolidate their position in the top half of the Premier League.
The Tigers have also been linked with Wigan midfielder Michael Brown but Phil Brown has denied making an approach.
He said: "We have got a number of irons in the fire, but just because the transfer window opens, doesn't mean to say everyone jumps into business straight away.
"A lot of these windows start with the big boys, and once they start to do their dealings everyone else follows suit. We have got certain targets earmarked."
One piece of business that looks certain to go through is the signing of defender Kamil Zayatte on a permanent deal from Swiss side Young Boys.
The Guinea international, 23, has made a big impression since joining the club on loan in August.
"We are very close," said Brown. "We are sitting down with his advisors and people at Young Boys of Berne. Hopefully we will have something to announce very soon."

Manchester United midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo insists continued speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid is not true, after further reports that he has already signed for the Spanish champions.
Ronaldo, though, has reiterated that the claim is false, telling United's official website: "There's always speculation, not just about me, but about the future of players all around the world.
"People were speaking about me this summer but that was normal because of what I did during the season.
"What people are saying now (the recent speculation about an agreement with Real Madrid) is not true.
"Who says that is a liar because I am happy at the club, I want to stay here. I feel at home here. I feel very happy here."
Meanwhile, Ronaldo admits he felt under pressure to impress after a summer of rumours, but was not worried that fans would turn against him.
"I think the people don't forget quickly what you do for the club," he added. "When I arrived at the stadium, to play (my first game of this season) against Villarreal, I felt a little bit of pressure.
"But the fans were very good and this is why I feel the Manchester United supporters are amazing.
"I love the fans because they have been brilliant with me, not just this season but every season. Like I said before, I feel at home in Manchester."

Villarreal star Marcos Senna has rubbished reports which claimed he is eager to join Manchester City in the January transfer window.
Senna, who impressed as his country secured glory at Euro 2008, was recently quoted as saying he is 'interested in the challenge' of the English top flight.
However, the 32-year-old insists he is only focused on life at El Madrigal and knows nothing of any interest from City.
"I know nothing about everything that is being said and I have not spoken to anyone at Manchester City," Senna said in Marca.
"I have read the same things as everyone else and I do not know where it has come from. I only want to think about Villarreal and helping the team to do well.
"I have read about huge sums of money, but the only thing I want to focus on is playing for my team.
"It has all surprised me. I have never said anything to anyone about this and I am calm."

Arsenal defender Kolo Toure will demand a move in the January transfer window after a furious bust-up with team-mate William Gallas, according to reports in the English media.
"I know about it (the transfer request)," Hill-Wood said. "But we are not going to accept it.
"We are not looking to let any of our players go and he is under contract - and we expect him to honour it."
The defender got into a row with former captain Gallas following the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Boxing Day and has now told the Emirates club that he wants to quit in January, news which will alert Manchester City who are keen on bringing the £10million-rated defender to Eastlands.
A source told the Daily Star: "Kolo doesn't want to stay - he cannot stand Gallas and Gallas cannot stand him.
"Gallas is showing him complete disrespect and Kolo believes he's been mouthing off to Wenger about them not being able to play together and Wenger is listening to him."
Toure was dropped for the unconvincing 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Sunday after playing alongside Gallas in the heartbreaking draw at Villa Park.
Despite the 27-year-old's desire to quit north London, Wenger could still reject his transfer request - but could be forced to part with the versatile defender to boost funds.
Wenger hopes to bolster his midfield ranks, with Everton playmaker Mikel Arteta and Switzerland international Gokhan Inler on the Frenchman's radar.
And with Toure contracted to the club until August 2010, Wenger could be tempted into parting with the defender to release his £3.5m-per-year salary.

Hull thought they had earned a late lifeline in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa at the KC Stadium when Bennett pointed to the spot in injury time for an apparent handball by Ashley Young.
Bennett, however, changed his mind following protests by Villa and consultation with his assistant Andy Halliday, the pair correctly agreeing the ball had struck the crossbar and not Young's raised arm.
There have since been claims a third party could have used video replays and then advised the officials of the correct decision via their earpieces.
This would contravene Premier League rules which forbid third-party influence or the use of replays and competition officials are adamant this did not occur.
A Premier League spokesman said: "(Referees chief) Keith Hackett has spoken to Steve Bennett and the other match officials and what is absolutely clear is the decision was made between the assistant referee and the referee."
Additionally, the Premier League have also pointed out that video screens have now been removed from technical areas as part of the 'Get on with the Game' initiative and replays cannot be seen.
Hull chairman Paul Duffen has called for the matter to be investigated.
Duffen has no qualms over Bennett's final decision but has raised questions about the way at which it was reached.
"All we are saying is that the events bring into question who exactly did influence the referee," Duffen said in the Daily Mail.
"I would like a report from the match officials and confirmation of who was talking in the earpiece. There is a concern that somebody (else) was using video evidence.
"We are most concerned about the integrity of the competition and that some form of video evidence isn't being introduced by officials on a discretionary basis.
"Once Steve Bennett had awarded the penalty - and he is not known as a referee who is easily swayed - he didn't have any doubt about the decision.
"We don't see any way the linesman could have had a view of it and he did not attract the referee's attention at all.
"But at the point Bennett went across to talk to (Halliday), the linesman was obviously listening to someone in his earpiece while Bennett was standing next to him.
"It did look to all who were there as if the linesman was relaying information he was getting in his earpiece from somewhere else in the ground."

The 28-year-old faces a maximum five-year jail term if convicted after being accused of assaulting businessman and part-time DJ Marcus McGee, 34, who was injured during a fight at the Lounge Inn.
Reds skipper Gerrard will attend North Sefton Magistrates' Court in Southport on January 23 but he has been given the full backing of the Anfield hierarchy, with Benitez the latest to give the club captain his support.
The Spaniard, who returned to Melwood yesterday for the first time since undergoing surgery on a kidney stone problem a fortnight ago, told the club's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: ''Steven is our captain and a key player for us, but more than this, I know him as a nice person.
''I sat down with him yesterday morning and had a very good talk with him about the situation and I was also able to speak at length with our club lawyer.
''Steven explained to me what had happened and I told him he has my full support and backing, along with everyone else at the football club.
''He's trained with the other lads after a couple of days off for the squad and is keen now to focus solely on his football.
''We've worked very hard to get into the position we're in going through to the new year and all of us are determined to keep that progress going.
''We'll do whatever we can to support Steven in the weeks ahead, but we're now concentrating on our preparation for the FA Cup game at Preston this weekend.''
The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) have also offered their help to the England midfielder.
PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor told PA Sport: ''We have a watching brief on this and have offered any help we can.
''I was concerned when I heard about the case as I have known Steven Gerrard a long time.
''I don't know the full details but as the players' union we would want to be supportive of him.''
Gerrard returned to training yesterday with little fanfare at the Melwood training ground.
The England international arrived at the ground in the suburb of West Derby in his black Range Rover Sport to be greeted by a few fans who turned out despite the freezing temperatures.
Gerrard was charged with two other men following a fight at the Merseyside bar in the early hours of Monday.
Mr McGee, of Southport, allegedly lost a tooth and needed stitches to a face cut.
Gerrard, of Formby, Merseyside, will go before magistrates with John Doran, 29, and Ian Gerard Smith, 19, both of Huyton.
They are also facing counts of assault and affray.

Hull City boss Phil Brown claimed to be bemused after being awarded then denied a late penalty in Tuesday night's defeat by Aston Villa.
Villa snatched what turned out to be the winner in the 88th minute when Kamil Zayatte turned Ashley Young's cross into his own net.
But there was still time for more drama as referee Steve Bennett pointed to the spot after ruling that Young had handled on his own line in injury-time.
Villa protested and Bennett changed his mind after consulting with his assistant, who correctly had seen the ball hit the bar and not Young's hand.
Brown conceded the ''harsh reality'' was that the final decision was correct but he was unhappy at the about-turn.
''People will end up talking about the penalty decision which wasn't,'' said Brown, who got into an argument over the matter with a journalist in his post-match press conference.
''It's beyond me whether it was a penalty or it wasn't - he's given it. A referee gives a penalty and then a linesman tells you it's not.
''Some days you get bad days at the office because of referees, other days you get bad days at the office because of players. Today was a good day at the office from the players and not so good from the ref.''
Brown was at least pleased with the performance of his players after their 5-1 thrashing at Manchester City on Boxing Day.
Brown, who made five changes following their Eastlands humiliation, said: ''What is relevant is that is a great performance from Hull City and one I am quite proud of.
''I'm quite pleased with the mentality, quite pleased with the response.''
Victory lifted Villa back into fourth and left them well-placed to launch a serious push for a Champions League place in 2009.
It also proved Villa's continued determination to fight for the full 90 minutes after a late win over West Ham and last-gasp draw against Arsenal.
Manager Martin O'Neill said: ''It's not like us to have a bit of drama at the end. We didn't play well in the match. We left a wee bit behind at Villa Park against Arsenal, and that's maybe understandable.
''We didn't play well enough, but suddenly when it looked like the game was maybe heading for stalemate, Ashley Young produces a piece of magic, absolutely brilliant.
''We get the goal, then we had the drama at the end. I've no idea why Ashley put his hand in the air. He is a very intelligent player, especially when we came up the corridor and said he knew it was going over the bar.
''He wouldn't have been on the bus coming home tonight! But the referee has been exceptionally courageous to change his mind. It is a very brave decision. It turns out it was right but it was delight turned to despair and despair back to delight for us.''
Young praised the decision of Bennett to reverse the penalty verdict.
''I didn't touch it with my hand, you can clearly see it was going over,'' Young told Sky Sports.
''The referee deserves a lot of credit. I was just seeing it out and we got our reward at the end of the day. It's clear, I think, that it's hit the bar and gone over. The referee has given the penalty then changed his mind and he deserves credit for that.''

Wigan Athletic winger Luis Antonio Valencia would jump at the chance to join Real Madrid, according to his agent.
"It would be a dream for Antonio to move to Real Madrid: a very beautiful opportunity," Herrera said. "But until there is something official I don't want to say anything."
"When there is an official announcement from someone with authority at Madrid, called (Pedro) Mijatovic or (Carlos) Bucero, telling us of an offer, then we will talk.
"I have understood that Madrid want to close the signing that they are chasing during the first week of January," Herrera told AS. "We will see what will happen in the next few days."
On Monday one of Valencia's other advisors, Pedro Romero, claimed that the Ecuador international was refusing to speak about the proposed transfer as a mark of respect to Wigan.
"Valencia would prefer to stay on the margins and let things happen naturally as he doesn't want his words to be misinterpreted," Romero said.
"In addition, he wants to focus solely on Wigan and put to one-side all rumours about his transfer."
Real Madrid have already made two signings ahead of the January transfer window, bringing in Lassana Diarra and Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
However, the club are currently at loggerheads with UEFA over the regulation that states that only one player who has already played in Europe this season can be registered for the Champions League.
Diarra and Huntelaar were both involved in the UEFA Cup with former clubs Portsmouth and Ajax.
The signing of Valencia would pose no such problems.
The winger moved to Wigan initially on a season-long loan deal in 2006, which was then extended into the following season before the Premier League club shelled out an undisclosed fee for the former Villarreal player.

Liverpool will give captain Steven Gerrard "all the support he needs" after the England star was charged with assault and affray on Tuesday.
A club spokesman told the Liverpool Echo: "Steven has been an outstanding servant to Liverpool for the last 10 years and the club will give him all the support he needs at this time."
The Merseyside police confirmed the Reds captain was charged along with two other men who had also been arrested after a "disturbance" that resulted in 34-year-old Marcus McGee suffering facial injuries.
Gerrard, who was released from Southport police station on Tuesday morning, was at the restaurant and bar - which turns into a nightclub - with friends to celebrate Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United.
In a statement, a Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police has charged Steven Gerrard, 28 years, of Formby, Sefton, John Doran, 29, and Ian Smith, 19 years, both from Huyton, Liverpool, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident at Bold Street in Southport in the early hours of Monday, December 29.
"The three men will be appearing at North Sefton Magistrates' Court on January 23."
The spokesman said Gerrard and the two other men had been bailed and three other men who were arrested in connection with the incident were released on police bail pending further inquiries.
After the game on Sunday Gerrard, who scored twice, hailed his table-topping side as the best he has played in.
But several hours later he was apparently caught up in an altercation outside the Lounge Inn in Bold Street.
Police were called and arrested six men on suspicion of assault in nearby Lord Street.
The town centre business remained shut on Monday but evidence of a fight inside could be seen through the windows.
Spots of blood were clearly visible on the floor, along with shards of broken glass.
Gerrard has been capped by England 70 times and has captained his country on four occasions.
He was made an MBE last year and received an honorary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University.
Liverpool's next match is against Preston in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has insisted goalkeeper Shay Given will not be sold during the winter transfer windowThe 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been heavily linked linked with north London duo Arsenal and Tottenham in recent weeks with some reports suggesting he wanted to leave St James' Park after eleven years at the club.
Hard cash is at a premium despite owner Mike Ashley's decision to take the club off the market and speculation has placed an £8million price tag on Given's head.
Given turned in a remarkable individual display against Liverpool on Sunday and yet still ended up on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline, yet Kinnear says he has no intention of allowing him to leave St James' Park.
Kinnear told The Journal: "There is no problem there. He's very happy here, he's very comfortable at Newcastle United.
"He won't be leaving - he has no interest in that whatsoever. He loves the football club - he's part of the city and that suits us because he's a world-class goalkeeper.
"Shay's performance against Liverpool was brilliant and that got picked up on.
"But ask the Geordie fans and I think they already knew how good he is. They know their football, so to be one of their favourites says it all about how good he is.
"He's the best goalkeeper in the Premier League by a mile."

Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says his players have reacted with a 'positive' response to a team meeting called after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
.Scolari gave his players a day off but they returned to Cobham on Tuesday for the team meeting and training session after Chelsea allowed a 2-1 lead to slip in the final moments of the game against Fulham.
Scolari and his players took an in-depth look at all aspects of the game as they prepared to face Southend in the FA Cup third round at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
"Before we went to training, we had a good team meeting," said Scolari.
"Since Sunday I have had the chance to watch again the Fulham game and yesterday, with my players, we talked about all of that game before going out for a good training session.
"Now we begin to look ahead to my first FA Cup game, against Southend, a game we must be ready for, as if we are playing a team in first, second or third position in the Premier League."
There were a number of absentees from the session with Brazilian defender Alex and winger Florent Malouda, both hamstring injury victims in Sunday's 2-2 draw, out of action.
However, Ricardo Carvalho, who replaced Alex on Sunday, was able to put more work in towards full fitness.
